60% of Engineers prefer to stay an expert individual contributor rather than aspiring to be a manager. Many engineers experience conflict and frustration as they try to stay close to their field of expertise while being pulled away from their technical work.

The issue for organisations then is:

"How do we keep Engineers satisfied and continuing to grow and contribute in their career paths rather than experience a demotivating career plateau?"

Based on leading international research and an extensive pilot program with a major Engineering consulting group Trevor-Roberts Associates has developed an integrated program to address the career development needs of Engineers.

The Technical to Leadership Program is based on four clearly identified stages of development, with the transition between stages requires a cognitive shift in how an individual views their role as well as the development of different skills.

These developmental pathways are mapped against four career streams: Technical, Project Management, Client Relations and Business Management.

Benefits

• Clarity of expectations resulting in individual career paths and increased job satisfaction.
• Increased contribution of value to organisational performance.
• Increased engagement and retention.
• Early identification of suitable shifts across career streams based on suitability for Project Management, Business Development/Client Relations and Business Management.

Program Structure

1. Career Stage Assessment
A structured interview to identify stage of contribution in conjunction with a psychometric assessment of personality, competencies and career motivators.

2. Feedback and Exploration
Feedback of findings is explored in relation to Engineer Career streams and current level of contribution.

3. Career Development Plan
Based on the increased self awareness a development plan with specific actions is prepared-focusing on the skills development and values shifts required to contribute at higher levels. This can be supported by coaching sessions which address the skill development and deeper change required to make these changes.
